Earth sciences are described as the study of the origin, evolution, structure, chemistry, and physics of our planet. In recent years the scope of subjects has been expanded to include new geochemical and geophysical data from the Moon and nearby planets. In the last decade there has been a dramatic increase in knowledge and understanding of our planetary environment, and therefore we now speak of a “revolution in geology.” The goal with which the school was founded is to provide courses that update students on the latest advances in the subjects that comprise the Earth Sciences. Consideration has also been given to organizing field trips to Sicily, which has perhaps the most complex geology and volcanology in all of Europe.
