INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Founded in 1972

1st Directors Antonio Borsellino, Edoardo Detti, Franco Graziosi and Antonino Zichichi, now Antonino Zichichi

In addition to the goal of pursuing informational, educational, and promotional activities, which it shares with the other schools at the Centre, the International School of Environmental Sciences has resigned itself to an additional service objective. The school aims to assist government departments and, on a larger scale, the general population, in the continuing process of environmental change. This assistance will come in the form of proposals for principles of action, models of transformation and development alternatives that can be translated into practical, workable solutions. These proposals will be the result of the school’s course work, which will focus on issues and problems of significant interest and particular gravity in the local, regional, national, and international spheres. In this sense, the school stands as an experimental centre of international scope and interest, aimed at fostering processes of social and economic transformation in Sicily. It should be noted that the first course of the school was dedicated to the historic centre of Erice with the task of verifying the process of environmental degradation of the town, establishing general criteria for its restoration, and providing the Ettore Majorana Centre with precise indications on the use of some abandoned buildings that nevertheless retain great historical interest. The program of the department’s activities is listed below.
