INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF PARTICLE ACCELERATORS «KJELL JOHNSEN, GUSTAV VOSS AND EDMUND WILSON»

Founded in 1976

1st Directors: Kjell Johnsen, Gustav-Adolf Voss and Edmund Wilson | now Thomas M. Taylor

The frontiers of knowledge in subnuclear physics are largely determined by the maximum energies and intensities of particle beams provided by particle accelerators. Extending these frontiers requires not only the development of advanced technologies, but also an in-depth understanding of the behaviour of particle beams. Both for new accelerator facilities and for the continuous improvement of existing ones, refined theoretical approaches are required. In the past, such theoretical studies were largely based on the dynamics of individual particles. Today, with the very intense beam currents requested in the most advanced accelerators, and especially for storage rings, the consideration of collective phenomena becomes increasingly significant for achieving high performance. The school’s objectives are to help young accelerator specialists acquire the most up-to-date knowledge on accelerator design and to stimulate closer collaboration in solving accelerator problems between all those working in the field.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF PARTICLE ACCELERATORS «KJELL JOHNSEN, GUSTAV
VOSS AND EDMUND WILSON»
Director: T.M. TAYLOR
4th Course: Novel acceleration schemes and enabling technologies
Directors: R. ASSMANN – L. ROSSI – F. TECKER
27 July – 2 August 2023

Preliminary Announcement
Novel acceleration schemes and enabling technologies
The First INFN Accelerator School (new cycle) will take place in Erice, from 27 th of July to the 2 nd of
August 2023. The schools will mainly of interest to graduate students and young researchers in
accelerator laboratories, university departments and companies active in design and development of
novel acceleration schemes and new technologies enabling to go beyond the present limits of
accelerators. Rather than focusing on single type of accelerator the school will discuss basic concepts
and layout for acceleration of muons, of plasma-based accelerator and other schemes like acceleration
based on dielectrics or Energy Recirculating Linacs.
The one-week residential course in the well-known unique atmosphere of the Ettore Majorana Center of
Erice will consist of lectures and seminars and will favor the exchange between students and teachers.
The number of students is limited to 40, due to hotel and logistics of the courses, therefore it is
recommended that participants register as soon as possible (first come first served politics).
(more information to come in the second announcement)

The directors of the school
Ralph Assmann, Desy and INFN-LNF
Lucio Rossi, Univ. of Milan and INFN
Frank Tecker, CERN
